Week 1 - Drum Visualizer
Introduction
This project combines music, visuals, and coding into an interactive drum visualizer. Using Tone.js for sound synthesis and playback, and p5.js for creative coding, I developed a system where each drum hit generates unique, dynamic visuals. This post walks through the inspiration, technical details, and creative process behind the project, while reflecting on what I learned along the way.
Concept and Goals
I wanted to explore the interplay between sound and visuals, creating an experience where music becomes tangible through visual feedback. The primary goals were:
- Synchronize visuals with drum sounds (hi-hat, kick, snare, and tom).
- Experiment with dynamic animations that react to sound properties like duration and amplitude.
- Craft a system that feels interactive and exciting, whether through user input or autonomous playback.
Technical Process
Here’s how the drum visualizer was built:
1. Audio Setup:
- I used Tone.js to load four drum samples: hi-hat, kick, snare, and tom. Each sound was mapped to a specific keyboard key ("a" for hi-hat, "s" for kick, "d" for snare, "f" for tom).
- A Tone.js analyzer was connected to the tom drum to extract real-time waveform data for visualizing waveforms.
2. Visual Mappings:
Each drum sound triggers a unique visual effect:
Hi-hat: Three diagonal lines shoot out from the top-right corner, with randomized colors to simulate energy and rhythm.
Kick: Bold vertical lines fall from the top of the canvas, growing thicker and longer as the kick progresses.
Snare: Rotating circles (inspired by the Troxler effect) appear in the center, creating a mesmerizing visual representation of rhythm.
Tom: Waveforms are visualized as horizontal lines emanating from the right side, responding dynamically to the sound’s amplitude.
3. Interactivity:
- The visuals are triggered in real-time by pressing the assigned keys, creating an interactive experience where users control the visuals by "playing" the drums.
Challenges and Solutions
Synchronization: Ensuring the visuals aligned perfectly with the audio required using progress() values from Tone.js to scale animations dynamically.
Dynamic Waveforms: Mapping waveform data to visually compelling shapes was tricky. By experimenting with scaling and offsets, I created smooth, flowing visuals.

Reflection and Next Steps
Working on this project deepened my understanding of audio-visual synchronization and real-time animation. I’m particularly proud of how each drum sound has a unique personality in its visuals. Looking ahead, I’d like to:

- Experiment with 3D visuals using p5.js’s WEBGL mode.
