Sound Vacation - Mom’s Cooking
Queenie and I decided to create a sound vacation to a place we both know and love – our Asian/Southasian kitchens after a long day at school. The sound is meant to portray a young student coming home, kicking off their shoes, walking through the kitchen, and settling on the sofa to watch cartoons and eat noodles.
This was how we began our ideation process. We started with the word “cooking” and went from there. Originally, we wanted to simulate a conversation between mother and child, where one would speak Chinese and the other would reply in Hindi. We decided to cut that element out of our vacation because it felt more impactful without dialogue, and it’s more about what’s not said (Hey John Cage).
We met up over the weekend at Queenie’s apartment to get cooking (literally).
It was so fun to mess around with different sounds and how we could use different materials to create different impact. For example, we recorded the chopping noises two different ways: once on the green board and another on the wood. It was surprising how different they sounded!
Another sound that was fun to make was the walking. We used a combination of two sounds: Queenie’s footsteps in the apartment and my pant legs rustling against each other, which I did by just swinging my leg back and forth.
Two hours later, we edited!
